Public Education & Outreach

This section describes current outreach and education programs of the Federal government related to chronic kidney disease.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

CMS maintains a partnership with the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii: Kidney Options for Patient Empowerment Program (KOPE). The CMS Pacific Area Representatives have conducted three educational sessions with patients, family members, caregivers, and social workers for dialysis facilities. These sessions include presentations regarding Medicare eligibility, coverage, Part D, low-income subsidy health information, and other resources for chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease patients.

Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)

HRSA promotes public awareness of and support for organ donation though public education activities, materials development and promotion, and innovative partnerships.

Examples of print materials for public distribution include brochures, calendars, and HRSA’s “Health Passports for Life,” which provide information for the general public on organ donation and healthful living. Other efforts include, “Workplace Partnership for Life,” which focuses on raising awareness of and support for organ donation among employees in large workplaces throughout the United States; and “Decision: Donation,” a model instructional package for high school students about the importance of organ and tissue donation.

Other public education activities include traffic sponsorships/radio ads as well as a partnership between transplant professionals and the nonprofit contractor, Hollywood, Health & Society, to promote a more accurate depiction of donation and transplantation in television programming. HRSA started and continues to be supportive of the National Donor Sabbath, which is an opportunity for members of various faiths to reflect on the act of donation and takes place two weekends before Thanksgiving every year.

HRSA developed and makes available to the public two documentaries (available on DVD) on organ donation and transplantation. Emmy award winning “No Greater Love” highlights the joys of life saved by transplant and the tragedies of lives lost because of organ shortage. “A Science of Miracles” chronicles the evolution of the incredible science of transplant surgery.

Indian Health Service (IHS)

The IHS Kidney Disease Program provides information for patients, families, and communities about dialysis and transplantation, as well as links to other organizations and agencies. IHS’s Division of Diabetes Treatment and Prevention provides educational resources about kidney disease in their online catalog, such as Taking Care of Your Kidneys, a 15-page booklet that informs patients on kidney damage due to bladder and kidney infections.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

The National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) aims to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by kidney disease and its complications. A facet of the program is to educate those most at risk for kidney disease, health care providers, and lab professionals about the detection and treatment of kidney disease.

To educate populations most at risk for kidney disease, NKDEP provides easy-to-read educational materials for the general public, African Americans, and Spanish-speakers. The tear-off sheet of the Explaining GFR Tear-off Pad is intended for health professionals to use as they talk with their patients about their glomerular filtration rate (GFR) test results. This tool is available for Spanish-, Chinese-, and Vietnamese-speaking providers and patients, and a similar tool on urine albumin is currently under development. NKDEP is also developing materials for patients about the CKD diet and for parents with children at risk for CKD.

NKDEP’s Kidney Connection campaign encourages African Americans to “make the kidney connection” between diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease; and get tested for kidney disease. The campaign is currently composed of two efforts: The Family Reunion Initiative and Kidney Sundays. The Family Reunion Health Guide, the centerpiece of the Family Reunion Initiative, facilitates healthy communication and discussion at family reunions. Kidney Sundays offers a tool kit—which includes various materials such as talking points and a tips sheet—intended for use by health and community ministry leaders to develop conversations and present information about kidney disease at faith-based ministry meetings, health fairs, seminars and/or one-on-one meetings.

The National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC) is a service of the NIDDK. The NKUDIC houses and distributes publications about kidney and urologic diseases and promotes publications through health fairs and community events.

NKUDIC also responds to inquiries about kidney and urologic diseases—ranging from information about available patient and professional education materials to statistical data. The website includes a consumer-friendly listing of patient-advocacy organizations.
